A screen saver is a program used on Microsoft Windows operating systems that displays a screen when the computer is not in use for a certain period of time. Screen savers protect the computer screen from screen burn.
Enable or Disable Screen Saver
Perform a trick to enable or disable a screen saver in the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. When issues arise with the screen saver, sometimes you need to disable the program. Open the "Run" program and type in "Regedit." Once in Regedit, navigate to the line "HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Value Name: ScreenSaveActive, Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)." Set the value data for "ScreenSaveActive" to "0" and close Regedit.
Screen Saver Disabled After Locking CPU
Occasionally the screen saver will become disabled after locking either the Windows 2000 or XP operating systems. Microsoft has developed a Hotfix download update designed to remedy this problem. The Hotfix update is available for download in the Support section of the Microsoft website.
Screen Saver Activation
A common problem in the Windows 7 operating system is a screen saver that does not activate. To fix the screen saver activation issue, go to the Control Panel and select the Power Options menu. When in the Power Option menu, set the power schemes to "Presentation." Turn off monitor to "Never," Turn off hard disk to "Never." Set system standby to "Never" and System Hibernates to "Never." After making those changes, click "Apply" and "OK" to exit the Power Options menu.
