Motorcycle enthusiasts build motorcycle trikes for different reasons. Some want the thrills of motorbiking with increased riding stability and the smoother ride a tricycle configuration gives them. Others prefer the additional cargo and towing capacity.

Trike Kits

Bolt-on kits are a simple way to convert a two-wheel motorcycle to a trike. There are no alterations to the original motorcycle. The conversion kit attaches to the motorcycle via a trailer hitch. It can be attached and detached in less than 15 minutes.
VW Conversions

The air-cooled, rear wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle converts to a motorcycle trike simply since its engine and transmission attach to the rear wheel transaxle. The rear seat can be kept as a bench for passengers and cargo. An old motorcycle frame is attached for the front wheel and handlebar steering system.

Motorcycle Conversion

A two-wheel motorcycle can be converted to a trike by extension of the rear axle. Two steel bars are welded to the existing rear axle. Wheels and brakes are attached to the ends of the extended axle.

The axle extension method requires metal machining and welding skills. Do not attempt it unless you have these skills or are willing to pay skilled people to perform this work.

well I rode the old trike and sanded it down and primed it , getting ready to blow some paint and it turned very cold and too cold blow paint so I desided I would find out if it would crank in cold weather , sure enough it would notcrank all it would was idol, when I gave it the gass it quite and this went on for 30 to 45 munits and I got to looking at the fuel filter and no gass and I opened the tank sure enough out of fuel and I said to myself, self, you are some domb sucker.

I am 80 years old, but I love building things, i have built 7 5 string banjos and a base guitar a vilin, a motorcycle, and now I want to build a replicate cushman scuter, the trike to the right of this post is somewhat like mine.

well I rode the old honda trike I have built by byself and it rides perfect, I built it , useing a 87 ford ranger rearend and cb1000 custom with 32000 miles I had to get another set of cobs and they are flooding so I have to set the flotes but it steers just like a two wheeler perfect , i am well satisified with my first project, don't be afraid to tackle your dream, just take your time and think it through before youmove to build the part, a point you need to think about is (look at the motorcycle you will use, ) if it is a shaft drive look at where the shaft comes out and buy the rearend with the offset to the side the shaft comes out on, and be sure to measure. the shaft has to be in line (up and down and side to side )or the shaft will drop off and 1/4in, play from the trans houseing this has to be exact or bump or drop off and balanced and trued or it will vibrate good luck.

most trikes (home made) will most likely be built, useing shaft driven bikes because the rear axels are inexpenceses,(auto rearends)if you use harleys they are belt or chaindrive. I wanted to build one frof a smallto cylender bike , like 250 or 350, for fuel miliage but the rearend is so expensive, any one with an idea?
