Design
-
Traditional designs were frequently formed from family crests or heraldic devices. Occasionally the initials of the homeowner would be included. Modern knot gardens might include geometric shapes or symmetrical patterns, extending from simple to very intricate designs.
Plants
-
The best plants for knot gardens are those that can be contained well. Plants such as buxus, marjoram and thyme are ideal due to their tight growing physicality. Scented plants such as lavender and rosemary also make an ideal addition.

Form
-
Knot gardens can take on the form of either a closed knot, where the pattern has no access, or open knots with paths leading to compartments. Traditionally these compartments had a functional aspect and were used for growing herbs.
