The long sleeves protect the arms while the cuffs prevent the sleeves from catching on things like beakers or open flames.

Lab coats are also used to protect clothing. This will prevent chemical splashes or spills from damaging or ruining your clothes. It will also prevent clothes from contamination. Because of this, lab coats should never be laundered with regular clothing. Disposable lab coats are also available.

Some lab coats are made with a fire-resistant fabric. These types of lab coats are ideal for laboratories with potential fire hazards.Ones that are not fire-resistant can give temporary protection from fire. They serve as a median between flames and skin and can be removed quickly.
