Paying rent is one of the dreaded parts of being an adult. Trying to be an ace student and worrying about personal finance is tough for anyone. A little resourcefulness and sacrifice can keep you off the street and in your home.

Government funding

If your income meets requirements, you may qualify for rental assistance from the government. According to the Federal Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD), students may qualify for HUD funding if they meet age and income requirements. Or, if facing eviction, you may qualify for short-term grants from the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program through HUD.

Nonprofit Grants

Nonprofits like Modest Needs offer grants to qualifying individuals who have an income but need a little help to get by with bills or rent. The application process may take a few weeks. If you're at risk for eviction, give yourself plenty of time to apply.

Reduce Costs

If you don't qualify for rental assistance, try cutting other costs. Apply for food stamps through the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to save money on food. Cell phone company's like Verizon and T-Mobile allow you to suspend service up to 90 days, though each company charges a small fee to do so.
