Windows System IP Address Conflict on Network

When Windows detects an IP address conflict on a network, you cannot use your Internet connection or you may experience an extremely poor-quality signal. Fortunately, this problem can fix itself or require minimal computer skills to correct.

  1. Problem

    • IP address conflicts occur when the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which doles out IP addresses, gives the same IP to multiple computers. IP addresses are a computer's identity on the Internet, according to Webopedia.

    Causes

    • The most common causes for an IP address conflict are the DHCP assigning a static IP address to a computer but not taking the IP out of the pool of variable IP addresses, or a computer going into sleep mode and the DHCP server assigning that computer's IP to another one, according to Online Tech Tips.

    Fix

    • Most routers have DHCP enabled, so the problem should eventually fix itself, according to Webopedia. You can also enter IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW in a DOS command prompt. Restarting your computer also resolves most conflicts.
