OSHA Safety Glass Standards
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration says workers in potentially hazardous environments need eye and face protection especially when handing fire, mechanical, chemical or other irritants. OSHA has safety glass standards for eye protection that include filter lenses and safety goggles.

OSHA requires employers to protect their workers from acids, liquid chemicals, gases or vapors, light radiation, molten metal and flying particles. Eye protection can include clip-on side shields for prescription eyeglasses or a fitted shield that covers them. OSHA says eyeglasses are not adequate protection against environmental hazards, which could include chemical splashes, dust and objects, such ropes and tree limbs, swinging into the eye or face.

Filter lenses shade workers from light radiation. Shade levels are set for particular work actions such as welding and cutting. OSHA says that filter lenses should start with a shade adjustment that is too dark. It can be brightened, depending on the project.

Glass for Face Protection

Eye and face protective gear must comply with federal standards and have manufacturer identification information clearly displayed on it. Common pieces of gear included safety spectacles with impact-resistant lenses, goggles that completely cover the eyes, fiberglass welding shields that are fitted with a filtered lens, laser safety goggles and face shields.
