Tithes & Offerings for Catholics

Tithes & Offerings for Catholics thumbnail
Catholics practice tithes and offerings as part of their faith.

Catholic tithing and offerings originated in the Bible, and have since been carried out by Catholics all over the world. The Bible has many passages that refer to tithes and offerings, and these instructions have been followed by believers from Biblical times to the present day.

  1. Tithing

    • Tithing is the practice of giving away a percentage of everything that you earn, gain through good fortune or has been given to you. In the Bible the word "tithe" meant 10 percent, so believers are instructed to tithe 10 percent of what God had given to them. A tithe should be given to charity, the church or another worthy cause of your choosing. A tithe does not have to be 10 percent. If you are in difficult circumstances it can be less, and in better circumstances it should be more.

    Offerings

    • Offerings in Catholic terminology refers to the offering of prayers for those in need or who are sick or dying, and prayers of gratitude to God.

    Novenas

    • A novena is nine days of prayer for a particular purpose, and is usually directed to a particular Saint. For example, you would pray to Saint Christopher for a safe journey, as he is the Patron Saint of travel. Supplications, special prayers and litanies are also observed for nine days, usually at the same time each day. Novenas can be observed in church or at home.
