Do Flower Seeds Ever Expire?
Flower seed packets and vegetable seed packets are printed with an expiration date. If you buy too many seeds one year, you may be tempted to use the leftovers the following year. Does this Spark an idea?
-
The Facts
-
Whether the seeds are still usable depends on how they are stored and what kind of seeds they are. According to Oregon State University Extension Service, seeds for annuals are usually good for 1 to 3 years. Seeds for perennials are usually good for 2 to 4 years.
Storage
-
Leftover seeds should be kept in a cool, dark place. According to Oregon State University Extension service, seeds should be stored at 50 degrees and at 50 per cent humidity. Unused seed packets can be placed in a sealed jar with rice or powdered milk to absorb moisture and placed in the refrigerator, according to OSU.

Considerations
-
There is no harm in planting old flower seeds, but outdated seeds may not grow. Those that do germinate produce the same quality of plants as fresh seeds. Even if flower seeds are past expiration, planting them is worth a try.
