Information on the Yasur Volcano

Yasur is a volcano located on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, east of Australia. One of the most active volcanoes in the world, it has had ongoing eruptions since at least the late 18th century and remains active today.

  1. Stratovolcano

    • Yasur, which is 1,184 feet high, is classified as a stratovolcano, meaning it has steep sides and cones that build up from eruptions. It sometimes erupts from one or more vents.

    Eruptions

    • Yasur is said to have strombolian eruptions -- eruptions that consist of noisy, explosive, but brief ejections, rather than large, sustained columns of lava.

    Visiting Yasur

    • Although Vanuatu has other volcanoes, Yasur draws the most visitors, who can go there on their own or on guided tours, according to PositiveEarth.org. Most people visit Yasur from June through September. Yasur is one of Vanuatu's biggest tourist attractions.
