Dog Anxiety & Vomiting

Dog Anxiety & Vomiting thumbnail
Dogs suffering from anxiety exhibit many symptoms, including vomiting.

Most dog owners know the worry that comes when their pets begin vomiting. Anxiety issues present possible reasons for canine vomiting, but sudden increased anxiety can also be a warning that precedes dog vomiting.

  1. Anxiety Types

    • Dogs suffer from three main types of anxiety: social, noise and separation anxieties. Each type may induce vomiting, but separation anxiety seems to hold the greatest risk.

    Dietary Explanation

    • Vomiting often occurs due to a dog's dietary indiscretions. A dog suffering from anxiety, particularly separation anxiety, may eat whatever presents itself, including grass and garbage or other harmful nonedibles.

    Medication Difficulties

    • Treating anxiety-induced vomiting often proves difficult. Some medications, such as Clomicalm, have possible side effects that include vomiting. Treatment options less likely to contribute to vomiting include desensitization, distraction, soothing noises and exercise.

    Anxiety as a Symptom

    • Anxiety in dogs can trigger vomiting, but the process also works in reverse. Dogs with other vomiting-inducing ailments may exhibit increased anxiety prior to throwing up. If hypersalivation accompanies increased anxiety, vomiting will likely follow.
