Subway Safety

Subway riders should be aware of pickpockets.

Traveling by subway is an efficient and environmentally friendly method of travel. However, with the benefits of subway travel, there are also risks. Following safety guidelines from major urban transportation authorities ensures a safe and enjoyable subway trip.

  1. Before Boarding

    • While on the subway platform, observe all posted safety signs and follow boarding instructions. One should never attempt to cross subway tracks under any circumstances as many tracks contain an electrified third rail.

    Personal Safety

    • Pickpockets target subway riders as the cars are often crowded and create conditions for crimes of opportunity. Keep wallets and valuables in front pockets and purses or other loose items clutched close to one's body. Avoid listening to headphones as they can be a distraction to noticing a pickpocket or attract the unwanted attention of a thief.

    Emergencies

    • When boarding the subway, it is recommended that passengers locate and make note of the emergency exits. In the event of an emergency, one should try to remain calm and carefully listen to the instructions of the subway crew members.
