What Does Scientology Believe About After Death?

Scientologists do not share the exact details of what they believe happens to people when they die. They do, however, tell outsiders of their belief that the human spirit is immortal and exists for millions of years.

  1. The Thetan

    • According to Scientologists, the thetan is the undying spirit living in each of us. This is the real person inside us; the immortal spirit that simply resides inside of the human flesh. After death, Scientologists believe that we simply shed the vessels in order to find another.

    Rebirth

    • Scientologists believe that when they shed one body, they are free to find another vessel in which they can continue their goal of freeing the planet. Scientologists believe that their thetan has lived for millions of years, and that the movement of a thetan from one body to another is seen as a natural process of the universe.

    Importance of Reincarnation

    • Scientologists believe that the thetan is immortal, and the fact that the thetan will survive forever is a sign of devotion to the faith. According to this belief, scientologists give to their faith for millions of years, therefore pledging an eternal commitment to their church.
