The Illinois Nursing Practice Act mandates registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and advanced practice nurses (APNs) to complete continuing education units (CEUs) to maintain their nursing licenses and to expand their knowledge of the field. Section 1300, part 130 of the Illinois Administrative Code outlines continuing education requirements.

  1. Function

    • The act establishes requirements for CEU instructors and learning outcomes for nurses. Subsection (c) (3) expects all Illinois licensed nurses to develop their understanding of the nursing profession and to enhance their understanding of subspecialties. In addition, CEU instructors must outline course objectives and possess education and experience to teach classes. Under the act, nurses are responsible for maintaining an accurate record of credits received, and instructors are required to accurately record student attendance and report the information to the Illinois board of nursing.

    Time Frame

    • Per subsection (a) of the act, RNs and LPNs must complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years. APNs must complete 50 CEUs every two years.

    Benefits

    • The nursing act outlines approved sponsors for CEUs. The Illinois board or nursing recognizes organizations such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Association for Continuing Education and the Illinois Nurse Association or its affiliates.
