What Is a San Drive?

What Is a San Drive? thumbnail
SAN drives power the disks in storage area networks.

A storage area network (SAN) is a collection of storage devices and the software that manages them. Typically, these include disks and the networks are often called SAN drives (from disk drives). SAN drives are typically connected to a server.

  1. Function

    • Large databases require a large amount of hardware for storage. It is also important that the data in the database be instantly accessible and changeable. Often this means processing several service requests at the same time. These databases, and the software to operate them, are collected together into a SAN.

    Features

    • A SAN is a standalone system that is isolated from servers or other equipment. This makes security simpler and also allows parallel service requests without interfering with other parts of the system. A request can be made, and the system can continue, without waiting for a response.

    Effects

    • SANs are used for websites that require frequent consultation of a database that must be kept secure. The ability of these systems to work separately from other hardware both simplifies and speeds up customer processing.
