Lock Problems With Lane Cedar Chests

Since 2000 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued recall notices about Lane cedar chests due to a faulty locking mechanism. The lid to the chest automatically latches and does not open from the inside. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Problem

    • Owners of Lane cedar chests have reported fatalities and suffocation when children inadvertently become trapped inside older chests. The lock mechanism latches when the lid to the chest closes. The original lock does not release from the inside, making it impossible to it open from within.

    Affected Models

    • All Lane cedar chests and Virginia Maid chests manufactured between 1912 and 1987 have automatic latches that do not include a safety lock. Approximately 12 million of these chests were produced during this time period, and many are now family heirlooms.

    Identification

    • New cedar chests manufactured after 1987 have a safety lock installed by the factory. The lid shuts only when a button on the outside of the chest is pressed. If the cedar chest does not have the external button, the lock is faulty and must be replaced.

    Lock Replacement

    • Lane Furniture will provide a new lock free of charge for all cedar chests affected by the recall. Consumers can call the customer care department or complete the request form on Lane's website to request a replacement lock. Before contacting Lane, be sure to find the serial and model numbers of the cedar chest, which are located on the outside bottom or outside back, and the latch style---rectangular or circular.
