Marshall County, Mississippi Homestead Act

Marshall County, Mississippi Homestead Act thumbnail
Homestead exemptions are available to homeowners in Mississippi.

The state of Mississippi established rules and regulations regarding homestead exemptions by writing the Homestead Act. This act outlines which homeowners are eligible for exemption and regulates reimbursements for tax collection departments or organizations that lose money as a result of the exemption.

  1. Exemptions

    • The homestead act offers two types of exemptions for taxpayers in Marshall County and throughout Mississippi. Mississippi's "regular" tax exemptions apply to the first $6,000 of value, up to $240 of tax savings. There are also additional exemptions that apply to the first $6,000 but they have no actual dollar limit.

    Reimbursements

    • A tax unit may receive a reimbursement of tax losses in the event that the loss was a result of an allowed homestead exemption. These reimbursements are paid by The Tax Commission in the counties where the losses occurred.

    County Records

    • Marshall County, along with all other counties in Mississippi, keep original copies of all homestead exemption records, including Certificate of Loss, Recapitulation of Homestead Exemptions, Affidavit of Rolls and Homestead Exemption Applications.
