Celeron Processors Vs. Athlon Processors

For years Intel's Celeron family of processors have been compared against Advanced Micro Devices Athlon processors. Intel and AMD continue to battle for control of the market with these low-end CPUs.

  1. History

    • The Celeron processor debuted in 1995 along with the Pentium II processor. Subsequent Celerons appeared with Pentiums III, 4 and M as well as the Core 2 Duo. AMD only produced the original Athlon processor from 1999 until 2005. Successors such as the Athlon 64 and Athlon II have replaced the dated model.

    Features

    • The Athlon was a single-core processor with a system bus speed of up to 2000 MHz and processor speeds of up to 2.8 GHz. Celeron processors come in single- or dual-cores with clock speeds ranging from 1.2 GHz to 2.7 GHz. The front side bus speeds range from 533 MHz to 800 MHz. Both processors have up to 1 MB L2 cache storage.

    Considerations

    • Both the Celeron and Athlon are outdated processors that would struggle with present-day applications. Comparable makes of the two processors shows that the Athlon generally runs faster than the Celeron, due to the new dual front side bus, but users wanting to upgrade to an Athlon would have to replace the entire motherboard.
