A french manicure uses pink and white nail polish.

A manicure is a treatment for fingernails where the nails are shaped and trimmed, hands are exfoliated and moisturized and nails are painted. A French manicure refers to the method of painting the nails to resemble healthy, natural nails. The base color is a natural pink while the tip is painted in white or ivory. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Preperation is key

    • In order for any manicure to look smooth and professionally applied, you must prepare the nail properly. Shaping the nail with a fine grit nail file or emery board, trimming any hang nail or dry cuticle and pushing back the cuticle with an orange wood stick are preparations that will help your French manicure last much longer.

    Application tips

    • Once a base coat and natural pink color is applied to the nail, the white polish is applied in a half moon shape along the free edge of the nail. Doing this free hand without any mistakes takes practice. Those who do not have a steady hand will apply the base coat to the nail and then paint the free edge with white. The extra white polish can be cleaned up into the desired shape with a small paintbrush or cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover. After the white polish dries, the light pink color can be painted over the entire nail, although the white tip will turn slightly pink.

    Protecting the nail

    • A top coat is applied to the nail after the previous coats to protect the nail polish and to add shine to the look of the polish. To keep the polish from peeling, refrain from prolonged exposure to water for 3 hours after the polish is applied.
