A research paper isn't complete without a properly formatted Works Cited page.

In the Modern Language Association (MLA) style, the Works Cited page is one of the most important parts of a research paper. To take responsibility for their research, students need to properly cite the sources they used to write the paper.

  1. Set the Title

    • Microsoft Word automatically sets the page margins one inch from each edge. The "Works Cited" title should be centered on the first available line.

    First Entry

    • The first entry should be left indented on the second available line. The first line of the entry should begin all the way to the left of the page, 1 inch from the edge of the paper. If an entry is longer than one line, every line after the first should be indented half an inch.

    Each Additional Entry

    • Each additional entry should follow the same format as the first. You should not leave any spaces between entries.

    Header

    • In the header of the Works Cited page, place your last name, followed by the page number. This information should be all the way to the right of the page, one inch from the edge of the paper.
