What Is Needed to Build a Deck?
Decks can be simple squares or rectangles or elaborate designs with curves and multiple levels. Each type of deck requires the same basic list of tools and materials to construct it. Does this Spark an idea?

Decking Material

Pressure-treated pine and cedar are typical choices for decks made of lumber. Wood composites and plastic decking are selected by individuals seeking a choice of material other than wood.
Concrete

Bags of concrete mix are needed to pour footings that will support the deck. Concrete pier blocks may be used on top of footings if support posts are not embedded into concrete footings.

Fasteners

Deck screws, nails and joist hangers are needed to put the deck together. Lag bolts and washers attach a ledger board to the house. All these fasteners must be impervious to weather.
Flashing

Flashing protects the ledger board as well as the home from water damage. Without flashing, water can seep between the house and ledger board, rotting both.
Tools

A circular saw and a portable drill, plus hand tools like a hammer, shovel, post-hole digger and a socket wrench are needed, as are safety glasses, a tape measure and a level.
