Even the most heavy duty mattresses can get torn fairly easily. While unsightly, you can repair your torn mattress with some quick and simple fixes that will last for a long time and will extend the life of your mattress.
The first step in repairing a torn mattress is to secure the tear shut. Use a curved upholstery needle and upholstery thread, and turn the torn edges down and into the mattress. Sew the edges of the tear together using small stitches. Be sure to use several knots on each end of the tear to secure your seam.
If your tear is too big to sew or if you want to further reinforce your tear after you have sewn it, you can apply an iron-on patch. A patch will secure the torn edges and prevent them from fraying or tearing any further and will stabilize the weak fabric. To apply the patch, place it on top of the tear, and put a towel or pressing cloth over it. Press the patch in place with a hot iron, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If you have a tear in your mattress and need to fix it quickly, you can apply duct tape carefully over the tear as a temporary, but sturdy, fix. Apply duct tape both horizontally and vertically over the tear, making sure all the torn edges and weakened fabric are carefully secured underneath the tape. When you remove the tape, take it off carefully while spraying water to the underside of the tape to loosen the adhesive.
