Bay Leaves and Weevils
Weevil skeletons or droppings in your food? It's a horrible thought. Simple bay leaves may keep the creatures away from stored items, but scientists can't seem to come to a definitive conclusion. Does this Spark an idea?

At Bay
-
In the book "Robin Stewart's Chemical Free Pest Control," the author states "Bay leaves, garlic and black pepper are all natural products that keep weevils away." Stewart advises placing bay leaves amongst grains and flour or sticking the leaves to the inside lid of a box or other food container.
Research
-
A study conducted by Vassar College called "Use of California Bay Foliage by Wood Rats for Possible Fumigation of Nest-borne Ectoparasites," indicated that common rats may place bay leaves near their nest, then nibble on the leaves, as a means of keeping insects at bay. The fumigation technique reduced the amount of flea larvae that survived, compared to rat nests that were deprived of the bay leaf method.

Dispute
-
Other scientists dispute the notion that bay leaves discourage weevils or other insects. "There is no evidence to prove that placing bay leaves or sticks of spearmint gum in a cupboard will prevent or deter stored food insect pests," says the University of Minnesota Extension Service.
