Macrame Information

Macrame involves artistically knotting cord.

Macrame is the art of making designs with knotted yarn or cord. You can make many different items, large and small, from macrame.

Macrame

You can make macrame out of almost any kind of yarn or cord. Good cords for macrame include jute, waxed linen and hemp. For smaller projects, you can also use embroidery floss and plastic lanyard string (also known as scoubidou). You can even macrame wire. You can incorporate beads into macrame; natural materials like wood or seeds look good with jute and hemp, while small bright beads look pretty with lanyard string and wire.

Projects

You can make many different items with macrame. Plant holders are a traditional macrame project, as are pot holders for the kitchen. You can also make macrame purses and tote bags. Using thinner, softer fibers like rayon, embroidery floss or lanyard string, you can make make bracelets and other jewelry. For ideas and patterns, you can find many books and websites.

Warning

When making items that may come into contact with hot objects, make sure your yarn is capable of withstanding high temperatures.
