Airway & Breathing

Your airway and the breathing process are both controlled by what is called the respiratory system. This system takes the air you breathe and uses the oxygen to keep your cells functioning properly.

  1. Respiration

    • Respiration is the process of breathing. As you breathe in air either through your nose or mouth, the breath passes down through your throat, through the trachea, into your chest where the trachea divides and into your lungs. More specifically, the breath goes into tiny air sacs in your lungs.

    Carbon Dioxide

    • As you breathe in, your body tries to take all the oxygen from the air you breathe. Then as you exhale, the body tries to expel all of the carbon dioxide from your lungs. This job is mainly handled by the diaphragm, a group of muscles below your chest.

    Warning

    • This system, called the respiratory system, is extremely sensitive. This makes it very susceptible to the harmful substances found in cigarette smoke and other intoxicants. Likewise, air pollution can harm the respiratory system.
