VA Benefits for Retiree & Family for Colleges

Veterans and dependents may be entitled to a free college education.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers financial aid to veterans and their dependents for a college education. The Department of Defense permits the transfer of benefits to a spouse or children for specific members of the armed forces.

Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Post 9/11 GI Bill offers educational aid to active-duty service members, retirees, members of the armed forces who have completed their enlistment term and members of military reserve units in good standing. A monthly housing allowance equal to level E-5 service with dependents is included in this veteran's college aid program.

Books and Housing

An annual text book and allowance totaling $1,000 is also awarded. Active duty students do not receive the housing or supplies allowance. Tuition awards vary depending upon years of military service. Veterans who served at least 30 months or 30 days and were discharged because of a service-related disability have all of their tuition paid.

Service Requirements

Members of the armed forces with six years of service who agree to re-enlist for four more years, can receive assistance for dependents while on active duty. A veteran who has 10 service years can transfer benefits to dependents without the additional four-year requirement. Soldiers who become retirement-eligible before August 2013 also qualify to transfer benefits.
