Communication Technology & Social Change
Significant advances in communication technology over the past several decades have impacted society in ways that are only beginning to become apparent. Modern communication tools such as the Internet, email and social networking sites have created what some have coined a "global village."

Email and Social Change
-
Email has become one of the most popular forms of communication technology. The popularization of electronic mail (email) in the early 1990s has dramatically changed the way people send messages to each other, making written communication almost instantaneous. Rather than writing and then sending messages through the standard postal service, users are able to transmit messages within a matter of minutes, thus markedly increasing the speed at which information can be exchanged.
Internet and Social Change
-
The Internet has revolutionized how people communicate with each other. The next and arguably biggest advancement in communication technology took place in the mid 1990s with the rapid spread of the World Wide Web, or Internet. The use of this technology has revolutionized the area of communication unlike anything seen since the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. People from all over the world now share not only written messages, but pictures, video and sound.

Social Networks and Social Change
-
Social networking sites have connected people the world over. The newest form of communication technology to affect social change is the recent advent of social networking sites such as Facebook available on the Internet. These sites have allowed people to stay in touch with one another on a daily basis, in addition to reconnect with people they had long lost touch with. As a result, people from the four corners of the world may remain in constant contact.
