Safety Recommendations for a Crib With Stationary Side Rails

Consumer Reports tested many cribs and found "the safest cribs are basic, with simple lines and no scrollwork or finials -- infants can strangle if their clothing gets caught in such detail work." A safe crib should have solid construction, be easy to use and should have safety certifications.

  1. Crib Construction

    • Consumer Reports is now advising against drop-side cribs due to many recent recalls. Cribs with stationary sides are considered safer. Check a crib's sturdiness before buying. A sturdy crib is more likely to be safe. Use a floor-model crib as a guide and check for loose parts, dangerous finials or decorative details. Exert pressure on the crib and shake it to ensure it can withstand normal wear and tear. Consumer Reports reminds buyers "that display models aren't always as tightly assembled as they could be."

    Ease of Use

    • Cribs with stationary sides are easier to use than drop-side cribs because there are fewer moving parts and crib assembly tends to be easier. Assembly may require two people but should be fairly straightforward. If assembly is complicated, have a professional set up the crib. Parts assembled incorrectly can decrease the safeness of the crib. Adjusting the height should be easy for an adult to accomplish. Cribs come in different heights, and a consumer should choose a crib that allows her to safely reach in and take out a child.

    Certifications

    • Some cribs are certified by the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association). This is a voluntary certification, and while it does not guarantee complete safety of a crib, it does mean that certified cribs have provided extra safety features in order to receive the JPMA certification. The JPMA tests "corner post vertical extensions, dynamic impact testing for crib structural integrity, crib interior dimensions and component spacing, impact testing of crib side rails." Check for certification of stationary cribs before buying.
