Importance of Home Economics Education

Home economics teaches children how to run a household. Although they are too young to run a household in its entirety, home economics teaches them how to assist the parent or guardian in household chores. When the child is on his own, he will know how to perform basic household duties.

  • Home economics teaches middle school children how to take care of their clothing. From patching a hole to doing laundry, the child learns how to preserve his clothing so he can wear it as long a possible and save money on clothing needs.

  • In home economics, students learn how to prepare a balanced meal. The course also teaches how to plan, prepare and organize meals. When the student has her own household, eating properly will help her and her family stay healthy while still keeping grocery costs low.

Work/Life Balance

  • Work/life balance is essential. Home economics teaches the student how to balance a career and family life while minimizing stress. Part of the work/life balance is teaching a student how to make a household budget to live within his means. This ensures he can spend time with his family and not have to work an inordinate number of hours to maintain a lifestyle.
