Hazardous materials training last two days.

Hazmat shipping training and safety compliance procedures are mandated and governed by the United States Department of Transportation. Three separate categories of hazardous materials transportation certification exist for moving dangerous materials over the road, in the air and by boat.

  1. Hazardous Materials Regulations

    • The United States Department of Transportation, or USDOT, considers all hazmat shippers to be "hazmat employees." An individual can be hired for a shipping job without certification, but must successfully complete the course during the first 90 days of employment. The training certificate is valid for three years. Shippers must renew the certificate every three years or when USDOT regulations change. As of 2010, the fine for shipping hazardous materials without certification carried a $55,000 fine per occurrence.

    Curriculum

    • All hazardous materials classification courses occur over a two-day period and pretraining online course work. Course curriculum covers materials labeling and packaging, cargo security plans, segregating cargo, priority materials, fines, emergency communications, record keeping and inspections.

    Certification

    • Transportation shipper certification includes over-the-road weight and combustible transportation polices. Vessel shipper certification includes stowage guidelines, U.S. Coast Guard regulations and International Ship and Port Security policies. Air shipper certification entails mastering Air Transportation Association rules, individual airline policies and county level mandates.
