Insect repellent candles add ambience while preventing bugs.

Votive candles are usually about 3 inches high and no more than 2 inches in diameter. Arrange insect repellent votive candles around the patio or yard during a party to create atmosphere and ward off bugs. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Citronella Oil

    • The active ingredient in insect repellent candles of all shapes and sizes is oil of citronella. This oil is derived from specific grasses and has a characteristically strong, citrus smell. Oil of citronella is considered non-toxic and is found in candles, dog shampoos (to ward off fleas) and bug sprays.

    Function

    • The strong scent of citronella confuses insects such mosquitoes and no-see-ums. The citronella masks the odor of humans and animals so that the bugs cannot find prey to bite. Citronella oil does not kill nor injure insects the way toxic pesticides do.

    Considerations

    • Citronella insect repellent candles can be placed around the area of a garden party to keep bugs at bay. The candles last longer when placed in votive cups. As the wax melts, it stays in the cup giving off its citronella scent, and the candle burns longer.

Because votive candles are inexpensive, this is an economical way to keep guests comfortable for the evening.
