Poinsettias are native to Mexico. They were brought back to the United States in the 1820s by ambassador and botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett, which is where they get their name.

According to the University of Illinois, despite the common belief that poinsettias are poisonous, the plants are nontoxic to humans. However, the plants' sap may irritate the skin if exposed for a long period.

Poinsettias are perennial plants, so hang onto yours after the holiday. In fact, when summer comes you can even move your poinsettia outside; it will thrive with regular water and sunlight.
