Big Bend National Park is a popular ecotourism destination.

Ecotourism is an increasingly popular type of travel that helps responsibly preserve and promote fragile ecosystems. The World Tourism Organization says ecotourism is the fastest growing form of tourism, with an annual growth rate of about five percent.

  1. Economic impact

    • Ecotourism has a $5.4 billion economic impact on the state of Texas, according to the 2001 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. That amount does not include visits to beaches, hiking trips or opportunities to view scenery. However, the Texas Department of Agriculture said the amount was closer to $10.4 billion.

    Ecotourism opportunities

    • There are many opportunities for ecotourists in Texas, including photo safaris and tours, numerous caverns and an international butterfly park. Sustainable hunting also is an important part of the Texas ecotourism scene. Some animals that may be hunted with the proper licensing are alligators, axis deer and wild hogs.

    Hiking and scenery

    • Many Texas cities are located on the Gulf Coast and offer opportunities to explore beaches and to fish. There also are a number of hiking options, including Big Bend National Park, which offers more than 150 miles of trails.
