Committee on Women's Rights & Gender Equality

The Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality is a committee in the European Parliament dedicated to achieving, maintaining and encouraging gender equality within the European Union and abroad.

  1. Political Structure

    • The Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, also known as FEMM, is one of the European Parliament's 20 policy committees. FEMM members meet throughout the year and are responsible for issues pertaining to women's rights and gender equality within the limits of the European Union. The committee also offers aid and education in international issues of gender differences and discrimination.

    Focuses

    • FEMM has two main focuses. The first is to improve the economic situation of women with respect to employment opportunities, treatment in the workplace, salary and accessibility to both family and work life. The other focus is on the socioeconomic integration of immigrant women, which includes supporting immigrant women in becoming accustomed to the European Union's values and policies, as well as ensuring the eradication of crimes such as human trafficking, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

    Current Concerns

    • Recent concerns of FEMM have focused on gender inequalities in health care; sex discrimination in combating youth crime; sexual exploitation of children, including child pornography and sexual abuse; and the current situation of women in business leadership positions.
