What Is an SSL State?

The secure sockets layer state refers to the storage of SSL certificates in your computer's cache. These certificates are an important tool in Internet security for sensitive information.

  • SSL is the protocol that allows Internet sites to send security sensitive information in encrypted formats. Websites that use the SSL security protocol begin with https instead of the traditional http. The browser of the website using SSL will also have an icon in one of the corners to donate its security, such as a lock.

SSL Uses

  • Websites use SSL for the secure areas of their website, such as user login pages or shopping checkouts. Use of SSL protects the credit card numbers, addresses, telephone numbers and other confidential information so that third parties cannot access it.

SSL State

  • Each time you use a website that utilizes SSL, the site uses a certificate on your computer to verify your identity. SSL certificates are normally stored on your cache until the next time you restart your computer, unless your browser has the Clear SSL State option. Restarting or clearing the SSL state may be necessary in order to access some websites that use the SSL protocol.
