Bali has numerous inexpensive accommodation options for backpackers, both in coastal areas and in the cities. These include hostels, bed and breakfast accommodation, or lodging with a local family. Low-cost meals are available from small restaurants known as "warungs," and fresh produce can be bought from street stalls.

Fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport. Bali is accessible by air via Ngurah Rai International Airport, or by sea from Java or Lombok. The cheapest way to get around the island is to walk, which also has the benefit of allowing you to get close to nature. Local bus services, such as the Perama company, will transport you from place to place cheaply, or there is the "ojek" system, where motorcyclists carry you on the back of their bikes for a small fee.

Passports must be valid for at least six months from date of entry, and visitors must have either return or onward travel tickets. U.S. and U.K. visitors can purchase a seven-day or 30-day visa from the airport or seaport, on arrival in Bali. Overstay violations can result in up to five years' imprisonment.
