Crochet motifs

Crochet motifs are versatile and portable projects, with dozens of variations, and there are many sources of free patterns. Motifs can accent a blanket or sweater, or be joined to make smaller projects: scarves, pillow covers, bags and jewelry.

  1. Function

    • You can make motifs in a nearly infinite variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the most common are squares, circles, hexagons and flower shapes. The pineapple motif is a traditional design for doilies and bedspreads. Geometric shapes easily can be joined to make nearly anything that can be crocheted; scarves and tablecloths are common. Flowers work well as accents for hats, brooches, hair accessories and home decor.

    Patterns

    • Type "crochet motifs" into an online search engine and you will find numerous sites with free patterns, from simple granny squares to those with elaborate lace edging. Crochet Pattern Central has hundreds of links to free patterns. Websites such as Ravelry and Crochet N More provide instructions on how to join motifs together to create larger pieces.

    Versatility

    • Motifs are excellent projects for busy crafters. They can be made as small or large as you like and are easily stowed in a tote or purse. Pattern repeats are fairly simple to memorize, and a small crocheted flower or granny square can be completed in a few minutes while you sit through your child's soccer practice or wait at the doctor's office.
