A common use of Tarot cards is in divination, or fortunetelling.

Tarot cards have been used in many ways since the Tarot deck appeared in the 14th century. They were first used in playing a card game called Tarocco in Italy. In the 18th century, the cards began to be used for fortune-telling. Since the 19th century, Tarot cards developed into a tool for spiritual growth as used by many modern New Age practitioners. Another use for Tarot cards is in ritual magic and in casting magical spells.

In the Tarot deck, cups symbolize the unconscious, emotion, love and intuition. Pages represent young people, an aspect of yourself, news, a messenger and relationship. The page is a stylish young man with a feathered cap, water in the background, holding a cup that contains a fish, a symbol of the unconscious. The Page of Cups could be used in a magic spell to manifest love in the life of the person doing the spell, to request more openness to feelings in a relationship or to stir the unconscious, asking for aid in an artistic endeavor.

    Outward Focus

    • There are probably many theories of why magic works, or why it doesn't. One general theory is that a magical spell will influence the otherworld, the dimension where spirits and deities live, and those spirits and deities will then make subtle changes to physical reality to benefit the practitioner of magic.

    Inward Focus

    • Another theory of magic states that the intention and will of the magician, through focus on the symbols used in the spell, will cause subtle changes in the energy, unconscious and perception of the magician himself. This change in the magician's thoughts and deeds will then have an effect on physical reality. The idea behind this theory is that everything is connected, and that all energy is connected at some level. As change is instigated in the microcosm of the self, so the macrocosm of the universe will also be affected.

    Sample Tarot Spell

    • To use the Tarot effectively in a magic spell, it is necessary to be familiar with the cards and their meanings. Once that familiarity is established, pick the specific cards that represent the desired result. Memorize those cards and their symbols. Lay them out in particular order that best symbolizes the desired change or action. Make a drawing of the layout and the cards to carry as a reminder. Meditate on the layout and the cards. Use imagination and will and let it simmer both consciously and unconsciously. Notice as changes begin to occur.
