What Is Flash ROM BIOS?

What Is Flash ROM BIOS? thumbnail
Motherboard manufacturers periodically release Flash BIOS updates.

Every computer uses a set of permanent instructions that telsl it how to handle hardware and information. This set of instructions, called the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), is located on a Read Only Memory (ROM) chip.

  1. Function

    • The BIOS provides the computer with instructions that can (and must) be performed without loading any software. The BIOS boots the computer and tells it how to communicate with the motherboard, processor and other components.

    Procedures

    • Manufactures may release a BIOS update when new motherboard features become available. They provide a BIOS flasher (the software that install the update) and the actual flash file for download. Study the readme files and follow them exactly.

    Considerations

    • The BIOS update will not complete if the process is interrupted in any way. If the BIOS is incomplete or corrupted, your computer will not boot, though it may still be possible to re-flash the BIOS from a bootable DOS disk.
