Smog Testing on Motorcycles

Motorcycles produce the most pollutants on the open highway.

Although the California legislature was strongly considering making California the first state to require mandatory inspections for motorcycles, this idea was dismissed shortly after its proposal. There are currently no laws mandating routine smog checks on a motorcycle in any state.

  1. California

    • In 2009, California state senator Pavley recommended the mandatory inspection of vehicles beginning on January 1, 2012. After much consideration, the senate decided to overturn this proposition, thus allowing motorcycles to continue operating without need for routine smog testing.

    Exemption

    • Motorcycles have always been exempt from the smog check mandate in all states. Although their pollutants are a concern to the government, no states have yet produced a law making this smog process mandatory for legal operation and registration.

    Pollution

    • Studies have shown motorcycle pollutants to be significantly more harmful to the environment than vehicle exhaust. Although CO2 is emitted in greater quantities in vehicles, motorcycles produce nitrogen oxide -- a pollutant harmful to human health.
