Tulip bulbs benefit when you dig them out of the ground every two or three years. They do not require yearly removal. As bulbs mature, they create additional bulbs: When this underground portion of the plant becomes too crowded, the number and quality of flowers may decrease.

Dig tulip bulbs in summer, which is their dormant season. Wait until the foliage dies back and then carefully dig around the perimeter of each clump of foliage to prevent damaging the underground bulbs.

Rinse your bulbs with water after you dig them out of the ground. Separate the clumps of bulbs and spread them out to allow them to dry in a shady place that has a temperature between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Then store them in brown paper bags. Replant tulip bulbs in fall.
