Boat Fueling Safety

Boating safety begins with adding fuel for the engine. Improper fueling can be prevented when boaters understand boat fueling tips. Boat U.S. Foundation lists some tips for boaters.

  1. Benefits of Proper Boat Fueling

    • Boat fuel can give off chemicals, causing air and water pollution; proper fueling techniques can prevent environmental contamination. Marine fuel spills can cause injuries, such as falls.

    Before Fueling

    • Boat U.S. Foundation states that boaters should turn off open flames, electronics and the engine. Onboard systems can catch on fire and cause an explosion. Boaters must anchor their boats to the dock to reduce fuel spills.

    During Fueling

    • Boaters must limit fuel from spilling on the deck. Turn off loud music and keep away barking dogs, so as to concentrate on the task. Add the correct amount of fuel for your boat's tank. Do not turn on any boat switches while fueling.

    After Fueling

    • A boater's job is not finished after fueling is complete. Check the boat's surfaces and ensure that any spilled fuel is cleaned up. Allow the boat to air out before starting the engine. If a large, uncontrollable amount of fuel spills, contact the proper boating authorities.
