The National Personnel Records Center is a repository for military records.

The search for a veteran's World War II military record begins in St. Louis, Missouri, at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). The records document enlistment or appointment, duty stations, assignments, training, qualifications, awards and medals, disciplinary actions and active-duty health records.

  1. Access To Records

    • Next-of-kin can access a deceased veteran's military record if they provide a death certificate or obituary. Authorized third parties can request information from a veteran's file with authorization from the veteran or next-of-kin.

    Requests for Records

    • Veterans and next-of-kin may request copies of military records by filing an online request form or a Standard Form 180 (SF 180). Both are found on the NPRC website. Forms must be printed and mailed or faxed with your original signature to the NPRC. People near St. Louis may visit in person but should set up an appointment.

    Considerations

    • The NPRC suffered a serious fire in 1973. As a result, millions of military service records were damaged or destroyed. NPRC may be able to provide information concerning your relative through alternative record sources.
