How Much to Tip Your Driver?

The rule is to tip a driver a standard 15 percent of the total cost.

Your driver, whether it be in a limo or a taxi cab, deserves to be tipped for his services, but it can sometimes be difficult to figure our exactly how much is appropriate.

Tipping Standard

When it comes to a general tipping rule, 15 percent of the total cost is the standard amount for tipping. This is a starting amount and can be increased depending on how much you liked the driver and your own personal preferences.

Extra services

If a taxi or limo driver goes above and beyond the call of duty and helps you with your bags, opens the door for you or gives you advice on tourism sites, it is generally acceptable to increase the percentage or to provide an additional dollar amount commensurate with the work involved.

Warning

If you have rented a limousine or other high-end automobile with a driver, then the company may include the gratuity in the total cost of the evening or trip. When you order, ask if that includes tip. If it does, then there is no obligation to tip the driver at all.
