Are hand dryers the best idea?

Some people believe hand dryers are less expensive to operate and are more eco-friendly than paper towels because they do not produce waste. While there are advantages to using hand dryers, there are some disadvantages, too.

  1. Cost

    • It can cost a company up to 90 percent less to operate a hand dryer in a public restroom when compared to purchasing paper towels. There is also a cost to dispose of paper towels.

    Eco-Friendly

    • One advantage to operating hand dryers in public restrooms is that they can reduce the amount of trees cut down to produce paper towels. Using hand dryers can help eliminate up to 1,000 pounds of paper being added to landfills. Hand dryers do not go through a special cleansing process using water the way paper towels do.

    Hygiene

    • Hand dryers dry the skin on the hands rapidly. Some studies have shown that hot air quickly removes moisture where bacteria can live, though some studies support the fact that using hand dryers can increase the amount of bacteria on palms and finger tips, and can actually blow bacteria onto other people using the restroom.
