How to Buy a Business Phone System

How to Buy a Business Phone System thumbnail
A good and reliable business phone system is critical to effective operations.

A good phone system is key to helping a small business project the image of a larger operation and grow the company. Some of the most common systems are PBX, KSU-less, and VoIP.

  1. Considerations

    • Determine what system and features fit the company's need and budget. Contact vendors to learn more about the available system and costs.

    Types

    • Private Branch Exchange (PBX) connects business phones to a central control box called a Key Service Unit (KSU). Employees perform internal operations by dialing three or four digits; external calls route through an outside line. KSU-less systems offer low-cost portable phones with self-contained features, but you must plug the phones into special jacks. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone systems allow businesses to make calls over the Web. Many companies use VoIP to facilitate communications for their work-at-home employees or contractors.

    Features

    • Owners need to consider their needs, such as system's phone capacity, call-transfer, call forwarding and voice mail. Some other attributes may include music-on-hold, long-distance and "800" number access.

    Pricing

    • A full "turn-key" system would include everything -- hardware and software licenses, installation and training. Warranty and vendor support also comes with most packages.
