ANSI Standards for Safety Vests

According to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the organization is engaged in creating and publicizing standards for a variety of business sectors. The standard design for high-visibility safety vests are created in conjunction with the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA).

  1. Visibility

    • Carolina Safety Sport reports that ANSI standard ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 covers high-visibility apparel manufactured and sold in the U.S. This voluntary standard covers all aspects of the manufacturing process, including the type of background and reflective material used, placement of reflective material, testing and labeling.

    Types

    • ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 is split into three product types, taking into account the conditions and types of traffic speeds that may be encountered in a work environment, according to Carolina Safety Sport. Class III covers workers in environments with nearby traffic speeds of over 50 mph, Class II covers work environments with traffic speeds above 25 mph and Class I addresses workers in environments with traffic speeds below 25 mph.

    Emergency

    • A separate safety vest standard from ANSI covers emergency services safety-vest construction. ANSI 207-2006 is specifically designed with specifications for emergency personnel such as law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS). Design features include a vest large enough to cover a firefighter's jacket, and a cut-away area to give law enforcement officers access to their weapons.
