What is Aubusson?

Aubusson is the name of a town in France well known for the rugs and tapestries produced there. The fine, flat, woven wool carpets that originate in the town carry its name.

  1. History

    • The Aubusson rugs date to the 15th century, modeled after Savonnerie carpets that were made for wealthy European clients. Aubussons were the more consumer-available versions of these rugs.

    Tapestry Industry

    • Aubusson has a seat at its school of decorative arts reserved for the Aubusson rug and is home to the Departmental Tapestry Museum. The tapestry manufacture industry in Aubusson produces replicas of the classic tapestries and contemporary ones in a similar style. The tapestry workshops employ weavers, dyers and restorers.

    Town Facts

    • The rural town of Aubusson had a population of fewer than 6,000 inhabitants in the 1990s. The town's other major exports include electric lamps, rubber goods and aluminum.
