40 Hour Hazmat Training

40 Hour Hazmat Training thumbnail
The 40-hour HAZWOPER course is the most comprehensive.

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required by OSHA for anyone who will be involved in cleanup or emergency operations involving hazardous waste, or those involved in hazardous waste treatment, storage or disposal at a facility, including employee HAZMAT teams.

  1. Basics

    • Certification training covers how to protect oneself against hazardous chemicals and how to eliminate them, as well as the safety of other workers and the environment, according to Hazwoper Online Training.

    Subjects

    • A few of the topics covered in the 40-hour training course are identifying measures to prevent exposure to hazardous materials, implementing procedures for treating workers exposed to hazardous materials, and donning and doffing personal protective gear. Students will become familiar with the protective equipment required at their workplace.

    Completion

    • Some of the training of the HAZWOPER course can be completed online, but most should be hands-on. At the end of the training period, students finish with three days of field experience under a trained and experienced supervisor. A yearly 8-hour refresher course is required to remain certified.
