The Role of the CFO in a Public Company thumbnail
CFOs are typically the top financial position in public companies.

Large public companies operate in a number of capacities in the marketplace. The chief financial officer, or CFO, is usually the highest financial position in the company and plays an integral role in operations.

  1. Facts

    • CFOs work on large overarching issues that affect the company. They are the link between other directors or executive managers to the finance and accounting departments in the company. CFOs are also the public face of the company for financial issues.

    Responsibilities

    • Public company CFOs must set the audit goals and internal controls within the organization. These factors help protect the financial interest of stakeholders. CFOs also will seek outside funding sources, address strategic management decisions from a financial standpoint and sign off on the company's financial statements.

    Benefits

    • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that top executives in companies are among the highest paid individuals in the country. Median wages for these positions was $91,570 in 2008, with the middle 50 percent earning between $62,900 and $137,020. In public companies, CFOs will often receive stock benefit plans that increase their compensation.
